The ultimate packing checklist: my top 12 travel essentials for Southeast Asia

I’ve put together the ultimate packing checklist, including 12 travel essentials that I couldn’t have survived without during the last 5 months in Southeast Asia.

  1. LifeStraw water bottle: across most of South East Asia, the water quality is low and tap water is not drinkable. The LifeStraw water bottle uses a filtration system which provides access to clean drinking water on the go. The built-in filter removes bacteria, parasites, and microplastics from water sources allowing you to drink any available water. This was a lifesaver during our South East Asia trip as it meant we didn’t have to rely on constantly buying bottled water.
  2. Worldwide travel adaptor: If you’re planning on visiting several different countries in one trip then the worldwide travel adaptor is great to avoid carrying several different adaptors.
  3. Power bank: a power bank is essential for those long travel days when a plug is not always available. Both Quinn and I use Anker power banks as they are slim, lightweight and long-lasting.
  4. Microfibre towel: microfibre towels are compact, lightweight, highly absorbent and quick-drying making them perfect for backpacking.
  5. Lightweight padlocks: padlocks are always handy either for locking your luggage or locking away valuable in hostels. I always take a couple with me just in case.
  6. Crossbody bag: I don’t go anywhere without my crossbody bag. It’s a lot safer than a rucksack or handbag whilst travelling and it fits everything in it which I need for the day.
  7. Hair care products: travelling through South East Asia really takes a toll on your hair. The humidity in these hot countries along with sun rays and sea salt overload may cause frizz and dryness. Using protective products and adjusting your hair care routine while you’re away can help to reduce these effects.
  8. Revolut/Monzo bank card: Revolut and Monzo help you get more out of your travel budget as they offer competitive exchange rates, no foreign transaction fees and no or low ATM withdrawal fees. Most places, other than big cities, still predominantly use cash in South East Asia so having a bank card which has little or no ATM withdrawal fees makes such a difference.
  9. Packing cubes: these are a game changer with helping you fit everything you need into your backpack. I also like to split my things up into different packing cubes which makes it so much easier to find what I need rather than rummaging endlessly through my backpack.
  10. Travel First Aid Kit: my mum bought me this mini first aid kit to take with me when I left for South East Asia and I rolled my eyes but honestly I’ve used it a bunch of times. So, make sure you bring one with you because you never know when you might need a plaster.
  11. Hand Sanitiser: comes in so handy whenever you’re out and about. I love the HAAN hand sanitisers because they’re sprays rather than gels so aren’t sticky and they smell amazing.
  12. Waterproof jacket: you will especially need one of these if you visit South East Asia during monsoon season. Even if you go during the dry season, there does tend to be the occasional downpour so having a waterproof handy is great. Therefore, you can still do things in the rain without worrying about getting drenched.
