The 5 best day trips from Perth

Western Australia is Australia’s largest state, covering the entire western third of the country. Western Australia is known for its vast and diverse landscapes, including the stunning beaches along its coastline, the arid Outback, and the ancient rock formations of the Pilbara region. Since Western Australia is so vast, its capital city, Perth, is also the most isolated city globally. Although, there is so much to explore in Western Australia, these 5 day trips will provide a mix of nature, culture and adventure just a short drive from Perth.

1. Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island’s natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere makes it a popular day trip for both locals and tourists.

Getting there

The island is located just off the coast of Perth so you need to take a short ferry from the mainland, usually between 30 and 90 minutes depending on where you depart from. There are several ferry services which leave from both Perth and Fremantle, including the Rottnest Express and Sea Link. We used the Rottnest Express ferry service where a return ticket from Perth to Rottnest cost 99AUD or 68AUD from Fremantle to Rottnest.

Getting around the island

No private vehicles are allowed on the island so cycling is the most popular way to explore. I highly recommend bringing your own bike or renting one to make the most of your day trip. Since the roads are car-free they are also super safe and make for a scenic bike tour. The easiest way to rent a bike is by adding bike rental to your ferry ticket booking online. We did this when travelling with Rottnest Express and they give you your bike as soon as you get off the ferry so there’s no faffing about trying to find a bike rental shop once you’re on the island. Hiring an adult bike for the day with Rottnest Express cost an additional 36AUD on top of our ferry ticket. If you have your own bike, you can easily take it onto the ferry with you just make sure to pay the extra 20 AUD for freight when you make your ferry booking online.

Beaches

The island has pristine, white sandy beaches with clear waters which are home to diverse marine life. This makes the island perfect for swimming, snorkelling and relaxing. Make sure to visit Parakeet Bay, The Basin and Pinky Beach.

Quokkas

The Island is famous for being home to quokkas which are the often referred to as “the happiest animals in the world” due to their smiling facial expression. You can’t possibly leave the island without getting a ‘selfie’ with one but make sure not to feed them as human food can be harmful to their health.
